When you have a toothache, you don’t always have the ability to go to the dentist. You can get a toothache late on Friday afternoon, knowing that the earliest you could get in to see any dentist would be on Monday (if you were lucky). Or, should you break a tooth on vacation, you might not be able to get it fixed for a week or more. Luckily, there are things you can do at home (or on vacation!) that can help to alleviate the pain and some of these remedies for toothaches are easier than you may think.
When you get a toothache, it is because something is wrong in your mouth. You could have a crack in your tooth or your enamel, resulting in exposed nerves, or you could have an abscess or infection in the area around the root of your tooth. You could have gum disease or an infection, or you could even break off part of your tooth. Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that a toothache can be one of the most incredible pains you will ever have, so it is always to have a few remedies for toothaches up your sleeve, just in case.
One of the oldest remedies for toothaches is ice. You may not think that you would even want to get near ice when your teeth hurt, but you don’t put it in your mouth! By placing an ice bag on your cheek or jaw line, you can start to numb the area and even bring down some of the swelling that is occurring in your gums. If this hurts more, then of course, don’t do it!
Gargling with salt water is always recommended for any kind of tooth pain, especially after you have had an extraction. Salt water helps to keep the area clean and free of germs, and also reduce the swelling.
